PICHIT KEEPS WBA LIGHT FLY TITLE BY BEATING KOREAN YANG

February 5, 2000
BANGKOK, THIALAND-Slick-punching lefty PICHIT CHOR SIRIWAT, Thailand, kept his WBA light flyweight title as he displayed his superior ringcraft and speed to win a unanimous decision over SANGIK YANG, Korea, 12 rounds at the Convention Hall of the Mall Shopping Center at Bangkapi. (Remarks: Bangkapi is a sort of ward in Bangkok)

It was an encounter of lefties. Pichit, after a one-year inactivity, utilized his defensive skill to nullify the aggression of the Korean southpaw, and occasionally scored with light but fast combinations to pile up points steadily.

Yang kept boring in though his punches hit only the air, as Pichit outmaneuvered the taller Korean. Yang, WBC international 108-pound champ, showed his best in the 7th, when he threw more punches to the elusive Thailander.

Pichit, making his 5th defense, took back the initiative with his more accurate combinations, though Yang remained still pugnacious and missed plenty of shots.

Scored-Takeshi Shimakawa (Japan) 120-110, Takeo Harada (Japan) 118-111, and Silvestre Abainza (Philippines) 115-113, all for the Thai defending champ, 22-1, 13 KOs. Yang fell to 19-7, 13 KOs. (Remarks: Abainza might evaluated Yang's aggressiveness a bit too much without appreciating Pichit's Pernell Whitaker style.) Referee was Derek Milham(Australia).
