NAGOYA, JAPAN-Unbeaten lefty HIROSHI NAKANO(right photo), 111 1/2, kept his OPBF
flyweight title as he earned a close but unanimous decision over Korean
light fly leader PILKOO KANG, 111 3/4, over 12.
It wasn't as easy a fight as Nakano's manager and ex-WBC super-bantam champ Kiyoshi Hatanaka had expected. Kang fought toe-to-toe with the lefty champ, exchanging hot rallies. Nakano had the upper hand in the 5th through 7th to control the fight.
Kang, however, showed his last surge to dominate the 9th and 10th with his solid rights to the southpaw champ. Nakano took the 11th, which carried him to a victory.
Scored: referee Harada (Japan) 117-112, Lee (Korea) 117-114 and Ito (Japan) 117-114, all for the defending champ. Nakano ran his mark to 13-0, 8 KOs. Kang fell to 6-4, 3 KOs.
Promoter: Hatanaka Promotions.
Matchmaker: Joe Koizumi.
