VEERAPHOL KEEPS WBC BANTAM TITLE

June 25, 2000
TAKASAGO, JAPAN-Thailandfs Veeraphol Nakhonluang-Promotion(right photo) (AKA Veeraphol Sahaprom), 117 3/4, kept his WBC bantamweight title as he maintained the pressure and pounded out a unanimous decision over 12.

Scored: Dalby Shirley (US) and Gale Van Hoy (US) both 116-112, and Marty Denkin (US) 115-113, all for the defending champ.

Though there were no knockdowns, Veeraphol was an aggressor all the way. Nishioka, 23, kept moving to avert the champfs constant attack, but he failed to score good shots to the aggressive champ.

Veeraphol, 31, often threw leading rights to the lefty footworker and kept his initiative in nearly every round. Nishioka might take the 4th, 6th and 12th rounds with his positive but less accurate rallies. All other rounds were seemingly dominated by the Thai sharpshooter. Nishiokafs negative performance was simply our disappointment despite the close official tallies.

The champ raised his credentials to 26-1, 19 KOs. Nishioka fell to 20-3-1, 12 KOs. Veeraphol registered his 4th defense since he dethroned Japanfs Joichiro Tatsuyoshi by a 5th round KO here in December, 1998.

NAKA Undercard:

Unbeaten sensation Nobuaki Naka(left photo), 118, kept his Japanese national bantam title, though he failed to score his 11th consecutive KO victory only to outscore top-ranked Taiji Okamoto, 117 1/4, by a unanimous decision over 10.

Scored: double 97-94 and 96-94, all for the WBC #27 ranked Naka, 12-0, 10 KOs. Okamoto, formerly a karate master and kick-boxer, dropped to 13-3-2, 11 KOs.

Naka tried to outpunch the shorter opponent, who repeatedly attempt to counter the champ with his strong hand. But Naka, making his first defense, had the upper hand by dominating the proceedings.

Promoter: Akihiko Hondafs Teiken Promotions.
