ARAMBULET LOSES WBA MINIMUM TITLE ON THE SCALE

GAMBOA August 19, 2000
TOKYO, JAPAN-The official weigh-in for a doubleheader of tomorrow saw a fiasco when the WBA minimumweight champ Noel Arambulet, Venezuela, disappointedly lost his title on the scale due to his failure to make the class limit of 105 pounds.

Arambulet scaled in at 106 1/2 lbs., just one pound and a half over the limit at his first attempt, but didnft pay any effort to reduce his weight, saying that he would not shed any more poundage despite two hours given by the rules. His opponent, WBA interim champ Joma Gamboa(right photo), Philippines, weighed in at 105.

If Gamboa wins in this bout, he will become the legitimate WBA 105-pound champ. If Arambulet wins, the title will be vacant with Gamboa entitled to participate in an elimination bout to decide the new champ due to his acceptance to fight the overweight ex-champ.

As for the WBC flyweight title bout, the defending champ Malcolm Tunacao, Philippines, and Japanese challenger Celes Kobayashi both tipped the beam at 111 1/2.

The dual title bout, promoted by Akihiko Honda, will take place at Ryogoku Sumo Arena here tomorrow.
