KOREAN YUN REGAINS OPBF WELTER TITLE

TOKYO, JAPAN-Korean Sukhyun Yun, 147, displayed light but non-stop punching, dominated middle rounds and earned a majority decision over previously unbeaten Toshiharu Kayama, Japanese champ, 147, to acquire the vacant OPBF welter title in 12.

Scored: Sungil Lee (Korea) 116-112, Nobuaki Uratani (Japan) 117-112, both for Yun, and referee Bruce McTavish (New Zealand) 114-114.

The WBC #30 ranked 147-pounder Kayama was a prefight favorite, and started outboxing and countering the Korean infighter very well in the first three rounds. But Yun took back the initiative in the 4th through 9th rounds. Kayama, a taller stylish boxer, was in command by countering him with solid shots, taking the 10th and 11th sessions. Yun showed his last surge in the 12th and final canto.

Yun, 21-11, 11 KOs, who had lost his OPBF title on a technical decision to Shannan Taylor in Australia in 1998, again seized the vacated regional title by Taylor. Kayama sufferd his first setback and dropped to 16-1-1, 9 KOs.

Undercard:

Unranked Nobuyuki Doi, 122, took an upset hairline unanimous decision over Japanese #8 ranked super-bantam Jun Toriumi, 122, over 10. Doi is 8-2-3, 4 KOs. Toriumi, a southpaw loser, is 11-2-1, 2 KOs.
