KOKURA, JAPAN-Unbeaten Takayuki Korogi(right photo), 107 1/2, scored a beautiful one-punch KO over top contender Tatsuichi Hanayama, 107 3/4, at 3:10 of the 8th round to retain his Japanese light fly title.
Itfs a competive fight with Korogi outjabbing and Hanayama retaliating with jolting left hooks. As the contest progressed, the local favorite Hanayama visibly slowed down and Korogi had the upper hand.
WBC #6 ranked Korogi improved his mark to 8-0-1, 3 KOs. Hanayama fell to 12-4-1, 6 KOs.
WBA #6 ranked southpaw Hiroshi Matsumoto, 105, battered Wanchai Sriprajan, 105 1/4, Thailand, from all angles and finished him at 1:12 of the second round in a scheduled 10.
Matsumoto, who had entered the WBAfs top ten thanks to his upset victory over the then WBA interim 105-pound champ Songkram Porpaoin in May of the previous year, bettered his mark to 11-2-3, 4 KOs. Wanchai dipped to 5-3, 1 KO.
