TOKYO, JAPAN-WBC #9 ranked Koki Tanaka(right photo), 108, barely kept his OPBF light fly title as he mixed up with durable and game Korean Pilkoo Kang, 108, and dropped him with a crisp left hook in the 9th en route to a split but well-received decision over 12.
Scored: referee Ukrid Sarasas (Thailand) 117-114 and judge Ken Morita (Japan) 116-113, both for Tanaka (14-1-3, 7 KOs), and judge Kwangwoo Lee (Korea) 116-113 for Kang (6-5, 3 KOs).
Tanaka, originally a boxer-puncher, recklessly mixed up to make it a give-and-take affair with the pugnacious Korean, whom the champ dropped with a well-timed left hook in the closing seconds of the 9th. It carried Tanaka to his second defense of the regional title.
Undercard:Satoru Suzuki, 160, kept his Japanese middleweight belt on a quick stoppage of Ikuo Yamanaka, a lantern jawed hard-puncher, 160, at 2:25 into the opening canto.
Suzuki, 11-3, 7 KOs, floored him with a straight right, and his follow-up promoted the referee to intervene. The loser dipped to 13-7, 10 KOs.
Unbeaten feather sensation Eugenio gYujih Gomez, 127, ran it to 12-0, 11 KOs when he disposed of Thai national champ Saengsi Poh Chaiwattana, 128, at 0:35 of the third canto in a scheduled 10.
The Puerto Rican import displayed his awesome power in dropping the 19-year-old Thailander with vicious body shots twice prior to the stoppage. Though Gomez failed to score his 8th consecutive first-round KO win, he kept his winning streak by a TKO triumph. The loser fell to 9-2, 5 KOs.
