TOKYO, JAPAN-Keitaro Hoshino(right photo), 105, captured the WBA minimumweight title as he gained a close but unanimous decision over Filipino Joma Gamboa(left photo), 104 3/4, over 12.
Scored: Wansoo Yuh (Korea) 117-112, Hiroyuki Tezaki (Japan) and Takeo Harada (Japan) both 115-113, all for Hoshino, 21-6, 5 KOs. Gamboa, who had dethroned Noel Arambulet of Venezuela in Tokyo last August, fell to 29-6-1, 20 KOs.
Gamboa looked sluggish from the start, though he occasionally scored good shots to the 31-year-old Japanese. Hoshino, 4 years his senior, remained aggressive all the way despite Gamboafs last surge in the final four rounds.
Hoshino became the oldest boxer out of Japan that won the world title in his first shot at the title.
