WATANABE RETAINS JAPANESE SUPER-BANTAM TITLE

May 19, 2000

TOKYO, JAPAN-Hard-punching southpaw Junichi Watanabe(right photo), 122, kept his national 122-pound title as he extended his ledger to 23-3, 19 KOs, by demolishing Nobuhisa Doi, 122, at 2:25 of the third round.

Watanabe, making his first defense since dethroning veteran Setsuo Segawa, caught the game challenger with a solid southpaw left and dropped him for a compulsory 8 count in the second. Doi showed his determination in his attempt to retaliate with jolting rights in the third, but the champ sent him to the deck three times more for an automatic stoppage. Doi fell to 10-3-3, 4 KOs.

Watanabe previously fought currently world-rated bantam Toshiaki Nishioka in a quest for a vacant national 118-pound belt, but got stopped in the second canto after they hit the deck each other in 1998. Watanabe kept his winning streak since then, collecting many KO victims including Filipino Joel Junio, current PABA champ.
