NAGASE RETAINS JAPANESE WELTER TITLE

October 2, 2001

TOKYO, JAPAN-Rugged hard-puncher Teruo Nagase (20-5-1, 12 KOs), 147, barely kept his Japanese national welter belt as he struggled to earn a controversial majority decision over slick-punching footworker Motoki Sasaki (14-4, 7 KOs), 146.5, over 10.

It was a lousy Tom-and-Jerry fight. Sasaki, a University student, took the initiative with his superior speed, but as the contest progressed, Nagase, making his first defense, became so aggressive as to keep stalking the fading foe despite his lack of precision in his retaliation.

Scored: Uchida and Tezaki both 97-96 for Nagase, and Asao 96-96.

Undercard:

Japanese #3 super-welter Toshiharu Kaneyama (10-3, 9 KOs), 157.25, floored #9 ranked Yukiharu Shinyashiki (7-8, 4 KOs), 156.5, and halted him at 2:24 of the 6th canto.

Promoter: Yonekura Promotions.
