TOKYO, JAPAN-It was a night of upsets, as underdogs beat preflight favorites in three bouts.
Unranked Katsushi Kubota(right photo) (12-3, 3 KOs), 136.25, kept outhustling Japanese #2 lightie Kokichi Tanaka(left photo) (18-8-1, 9 KOs), 136.5, to earn an unexpectedly unanimous decision over 10.
Scored: 98-95, 98-94 and 97-95, all for the aggressive victor who decisively swept the second half.
Previously unbeaten Japanese #9 ranked flyweight prospect Wataru Suzuki (11-1, 4 KOs), 111.75, suffered an upset KO defeat by unranked Toshihiko Yamagata (12-3, 9 KOs), 111.75, at 2:42 of the second round.
Yamagatafs vicious left hook dropped the prospect for the count as he barely stood up only to be counted out.
Ex-national welter champ Yoshiro Nakano (15-7-4, 3 KOs), 154.75, surprisingly lost a unanimous nod to Japanese #8 super-welter Yukiharu Shinyashiki (9-7, 5 KOs), 154.5, over 8.

FUKUOKA, JAPAN-Unbeaten 115-pounder Daisuke Maruyama registered 9 consecutive KO wins in as many pro bouts when he blasted out Thailander Yodpetch Chuwatana at 2:07 of the opening canto in a scheduled 8.
Maruyama, a hard-punching novice with amateur career, has yet to be tested, nor ranked by the Japanese Commission. He will fight more experienced opponents in the future, and we will see whether or not he will be a real thing.
