TOKYO, JAPAN-Japanese #7 ranked super-welter Takao Onda (12-2, 10 KOs), 143.25, recklessly and unwisely mixed it up with unranked Kazuhito Misaki (11-9-2, 1 KO), 143.25, absorbed solid left hooks in the close quarter and lost an upset split decision (78-77, 77-75 and 77-78) over eight heats on Monday night in Tokyo, Japan. Onda, formerly the best winner in the Novice King 4-round tournaments, failed to show his previously fine form only to swap punches roughly, receiving more effective shots of the underdog.
Southpaw footworker Masaki Sawanaga (14-6-3, 6 KOs), 126, earned a unanimous nod (78-75, 79-75 and 79-74) over peek-a-boo stylist Toshiro Takafuji (7-3, 5 KOs), 125.5, over eight. Sawanagafs attack occasionally consisted of open blows, but he took the initiative nearly all the way.
