NAITO BEATS WBC #6 NAKANO TO WIN JAPANESE FLY BELT

June 6, 2004

NAGOYA, JAPAN-WBC #17 ranked Daisuke Naito (25-1-2, 18 KOs), 111.5, captured the Japanese national flyweight belt as he dropped previously unbeaten WBC #6 ranked defending champ Hiroshi Nakano (20-1, 11 KOs), 111.75, twice before he was awarded a technical decision (60-54 twice and 59-54) due to Nakanofs bad bleeding from a gash over the right eyebrow at 2:33 of the sixth round on Sunday afternoon in Nagoya, Japan. Naito, a notorious record-holder of having failed to win the world flyweight belt in just 34 seconds of the first round by the WBC champ Pongsaklek Kratingdaeng-gym in Thailand in 2002, looked so fresh and determined that he sent the southpaw champ to the deck with a left hook in the first and with a straight right in the third. Naito, as old as the dethroned champ at 29, may face ex-national champ Trash Nakanuma, also a loser to Pongsaklek in a quest for the WBC belt this January, with his Japanese title at stake. The crestfallen ex-champ Nakano made an announcement to hang up gloves for good.

Undercard:

OPBF heavy champ Peter Okello, 244.75, engaged in a non-title go and demolished Joeli Cagi, 249, at 1:38 of the second round in a scheduled ten. Unbeaten Kohei Ohba, 114, finished Hiroaki Kusunoki, 114.75, at 2:33 of the sixth session. Japanese top 130-pound contender Tsuyoshi Nakamura, 134.5, stopped Thailander Naphadetch Soonkilanoynai, 130.5, at 0:23 of the fourth in the first ten.
