TOKYO, JAPAN-An encounter of the OPBF #1 and #2 minimum contenders ended with WBC #13 ranked ex-Japanese 105-pound champ Makoto Suzuki (16-8-2, 10 KOs), 105.5, victorious over current Philippine ruler Elmer Gejon (12-6-1, 5 KOs), 105.5, by a unanimous decision (98-95 twice and 98-94) over ten hot rounds on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. Suzuki, a short but sturdy puncher, caught Gejon with a right cross, dropping him on the deck in the second. The Japanese veteran, 32, almost stunned the Filipino in the third and fourth. But Gejon, 30, displayed a fine recovery to sweep the fifth through eighth. Suzuki, who had forfeited his national belt to the current WBA kingpin Yutaka Niida via ninth round TKO in 2001, showed his last surge in the final two sessions to confirm his triumph. For Suzuki it was an important victory over the OPBF top contender.
Unbeaten Kazuma Suzuki (5-0, 4 KOs), 126, showed his power-punching in the first three rounds, but failed to score an expected KO win due to a nasty gash of Yoichi Matsumoto (12-8-1, 4 KOs), 125.5, caused by an accidental butt only to be awarded a technical nod (49-46, 49-47 and 48-46) at 0:54 of the fifth session in a scheduled ten.

Matchmaker: Joe Koizumi (as for the Suzuki vs. Gejon bout).

OSAKA, JAPAN-Japanese #8 ranked feather Makoto Uehara (10-5-3, 3 KOs), 125.25, proved more experienced than previously unbeaten ex-amateur prospect Ken Mitsuyama (3-1, 2 KOs), 125.5, halting him with a towel fluttering in to his rescue at 0:33 of the fifth round in a scheduled ten on Sunday in Osaka, Japan. Uehara had once entered the OPBF top ten thanks to his upset triumph over Philippine feather boss Jeffrey Onate last year.
