ONDA EDGES OUT EX-CHAMP NAGASE

February 15, 2005

TOKYO, JAPAN-Unranked welter Takao Onda (14-3, 11 KOs), 146.25, withstood crisp right counters of ex-Japanese champ Teruo Nagase (22-8-2, 12 KOs), 146.75, in early rounds and displayed furious retaliations with effective body bombardments to earn an upset majority decision (96-95, 97-94 and 96-96) over ten hot frames on Tuesday night in Tokyo, Japan. Nagase battered the less experienced give-and-take puncher with right crosses and almost toppled him repeatedly, sweeping the first three rounds. But Onda, formerly the national winner of the Novice King four-round tourney, dug a wicked left to the belly to have the ex-champ double up in round five. Onda accelerated his persistent attacks despite his absorption of Nagasefs occasional counters. Onda had him on the brisk of a knockdown in the final stanza to confirm his upset triumph.

Undercard:

Unbeaten prospect Masaki Miya (13-0, 9 KOs), 123, Japanese #9 ranked 122-pounder, returned to action after a one-year hiatus and displayed a one-punch KO of OPBF #7 ranked Thai national feather champ Denthaksin Soonkilanoynai (7-1, 2 KOs), 123.5, at 1:51 of the third round. Miyafs right counter was the haymaker that flattened the Thai champ who was carried out of the ring on a stretcher. Japanese #3 welter Teruyoshi Ohmagari (14-4-3. 13 KOs), 147, a stiff but hard-hitting banger, dropped Thailander Phonpetch Muangsurinthr (7-12, 4 KOs), 147.5, three times and for the count at 2:11 of the second round in a scheduled eight.

Promoter: Yonekura Promotions.
