MATSUMOTO, JAPAN-WBC#5/WBA#7 ranked 105-pounder Satoshi Kogumazaka (23-6-3, 9 KOs), 105, proved too powerful and pugnacious for Satoshi Iida (15-7-2, 7 KOs), 104.75, in winning a unanimous decision (97-94 twice and 98-95) over ten rounds to retain his Japanese minimumweight belt on Saturday in Matsumoto, Japan. The elongated southpaw champ had the game challenger on the deck with a solid left in the second, and took the leadoff since despite Iidafs retaliation. Having been annihilated by then WBC ruler Eagle Kyowa en route to an eighth round technical decision loss in a quest for the world title in June of the previous year, Kogumazaka kept his national belt for the sixth time and now aims to tie the Japanese record of the most defenses in the 105-pound division made by Rocky Lin in his next defense. Iida had held the current WBA world champ Yutaka Niida, then a national champ, to a unanimous draw (94-94, 95-95 and 96-96) in his last shot at the Japanese title in 2001, and failed to capture it again.
Middleweight Masao Ayusawa, 159.5, demolished Thailander Suttanong Sor Sitichai, 155.75, at 3:04 of the first round in a supporting ten.
Promoter: Shin Nihon Kasuga Promotions.
