PONGSAKLEK TO DEFEND IN JAPAN

August 19, 2005

TOKYO, JAPAN-WBC flyweight champ Pongsaklek Wanjongkam Kratindaeng-gym (57-2, 31 KOs), Thailand, will put his belt against WBC #2 ranked Japanese champ Daisuke Naito (27-1-2, 19 KOs) at the Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan, on October 10. It was announced by Miyata Promotions. Naito suffered his sole defeat at the hand of Pongsaklek in just 34 seconds of the first round in Thailand in April 2002, establishing a notorious world quickest KO record in history of world flyweight title bouts. Itfs a grudge fight, especially for Naito, who kept winning since his bitter experience and captured the national belt by dropping previously unbeaten Hiroshi Nakano, then highly world-rated, en route to a lopsided six round technical decision in June of the previous year. Pongsaklek, making his twelfth defense, gained the WBC throne by blasting out Filipino lefty Malcolm Tunacao in the opening canto in 2001, and stays unbeaten in nine years. If victorious, Pongsaklek will be obliged to face the WBC interim champ Jorge Arce of Mexico in his second next defense.
