SUGITA, OHBA WIN IN NAGOYA

NAGOYA, JAPAN-WBC#19 ranked ex-world 130-pound challenger Ryuhei Sugita(30-2-2, 22 KOs), 128, scored a nearly shutout decision (100-92, 100-94and 98-94) over Thai #9 contender Krachana Jocky-gym, 127.5, over ten onThursday in Nagoya, Japan. Sugita, who previously failed to win the WBAbelt from Yodsanan 3K-Battery Nantachai via a TKO route years ago, keptstalking and outhustling the durable Thailander, steadily piling uppoints. His manager Kiyoshi Hatanaka, ex-WBC 122-pound champ, hopes tomake Sugita have a shot at the OPBF super-feather belt against Filipinohard-puncher Randy Suico in February.

Fast-rising and unbeaten Kohei Ohba (13-0, 8 KOs), 117.75, decked animportant triumph as he pounded out a unanimous decision (99-92, 98-94and 96-95) over WBC#14 ranked Jose Angel Beranza (27-8, 24 KOs), 117.25,Mexico, over ten. Beranza made a good start to dominate the openingsession, but Ohba took back the initiative with more effective shotsfrom the second round on. Ohbafs body shots occasionallydoubled him up, though the Mexican refused to go down and came backfighting afterward. Ohba, a very much talented prospect, looked fineand his future seems bright.

Japanese #6 105-pounder Toshikazu Waga (10-3, 2 KOs), 105.25, won aunanimous verdict (100-92, 98-94 and 98-96) over OPBF#2 ranked Thaiminimumweight champ Weerasak Chuwatana (7-10, 5 KOs), 105.5, over ten.Waga, handled by ex-WBA 105-pound champ Keitaro Hoshino, was in commandalmost all the way.
