WBC#26 SUGITA SQUEAKS BY UNO

November 20, 2005

NAGOYA, JAPAN-WBC#26 super-bantam Masanori Sugita (20-1-2, 13 KOs), 123.25, pounded out a close but unanimous decision (97-96 and 97-94 twice) over ex-OPBF challenger Sunao Uno (16-5-2, 11 KOs), 122.5, in a ten-round encounter of local prospects on Sunday night in Nagoya, Japan. Sugita, ex-WBC youth champ, took the leadoff in the first four rounds, but Uno showed his retaliations to be in command in the fifth and eighth sessions. Sugita took back the seventh, and they fought toe-to-toe in the last two rounds. It is a question why Sugita, with such a good ledger, hasnft been ranked by the Japanese commission despite his victories over Eduardo Garcia and Jess Maca (in a rematch).

Undercard:

Shinnosuke Yasuda (13-1, 4 KOs), 116.5, scored a solid countering right to the temple of Thailander Palangchai Chuwatana (5-4, 1 KO), 115.75, dropping him for the count at 1:15 of the second round in a scheduled ten. Ex-amateur boy Kazuya Maruki, 140, the promoter Takaofs son, made a fine pro debut by flooring Thailander Mondang Lookmatulee, 138, twice en route to a quick TKO at 0:42 of the second round in a scheduled four. His father Takao Maruki was the first boxer out of Nagoya that fought in a quest for a world title, though he lost a unanimous 15-round verdict to the then WBA 130-pound champ Samuel Serrano here in 1978. Takao wishes his son Kazuya to fulfill his unfinished dream.
