IKEHARA UPSETS WBC#3 MEDGOEN

January 15, 2006

OSAKA, JAPAN-Unheralded Nobuto Ikehara (24-1, 18 KOs), 118, very impressively scored an upset as he caught WBC #3 ranked 115-pounder and ex-WBC flyweight champ Medgoen Singsurat Singwangcha (42-4, 29 KOs), 116.75, with a flurry of punches and hurt him so badly that the referee declared a well-received halt at 1:46 of the third round in a scheduled ten on Sunday night in Osaka. Medgoen is one of only the two boxers that previously knocked out Manny gPacmanh Pacquiao when they fought with the WBC 112-pound belt at stake and he demolished the Filipino sensation in three rounds in 1999. Ikehara mixed it up with the ex-WBC champ from the start, and landed effective shots to the Thailander. The second saw Ikehara have him at bay as Medgoen became groggy with his absorption of solid left hooks following busy combinations. Ikehara, in the third, accelerated his attack and effectively battered the rubbery-legged opponent by pinning him to the ropes. Then, the ref Miyazaki promptly intervened to save the loser. Ikehara, coming from the Osaka Teiken Gym (that produced three world champs of Jiro Watanabe, Takuya Muguruma and Joichiro Tatsuyoshi), wishes to be the fourth out of his stable.

Undercard:

Tatsuya Tsubouchi (5-1, 2 KOs), 117.25, piled up points early and withstood the last surge of Masahito Igawa (7-2, 1 KO), 117.75, winning a majority nod (97-93, 98-92 and 95-95) over ten. Japanese top ranked 105-pounder Takashi Kunishige (15-2, 2 KOs), 108, utilized his southpaw stance and finally landed a well-timed shot to finish Sangathit Por. Bunchuay (4-6, 1 KO), 106.25, at 0:57 of the fourth session in a scheduled eight. Unbeaten Kenji Yoshimura (5-0, 2 KOs), 129.75, an ex-amateur lefty prospect, swept all rounds and dropped Thailander Wanchana Chuwatana (13-13, 9 KOs), 129.75, in the seventh to win a shutout decision (all 80-70) over eight.
