OSAKA, JAPAN

WBA#9 super-welter Nobuhiro Ishida (20-5-2, 7 KOs), an elongated Japanese jabber, 154, barely survived a bad knockdown in the fifth, and earned a controversial split decision (115-114, 115-113 and 113-115) over WBA#8 Marco Avendano (26-6-1, 18 KOs), 153.5, over ten close rounds on Monday in Osaka, Japan. Though the promoter ballyhooed it as an eliminator to decide the challenger to WBA ruler Daniel Santos, the Association had already denied such an invalid publicity as it was only an encounter of the #8 and #9 contenders.

Ex-WBC/WBA 105-pound champ Katsunari Takayama (22-3, 9 KOs), 108.25, kept stalking Mexican substitute Javier Murillo Maravilla (12-8-2, 6 KOs), 108.75, all night, scoring a shutout decision (all 100-90) over ten.

In an national elimination bout following the main eventer Ishidafs relinquishment, tricky southpaw Yuki Nonaka (16-7-2, 5 KOs), 153.75, acquired the vacant Japanese 154-pound belt by chalking up a fine TKO win over brutal swinger Akihiro Furukawa (12-2-1, 9 KOs), 154, at 2:36 of the eighth session.

Promoter: Kanazawa Promotions.

Matchmaker: Joe Koizumi (as for the Takayama-Murillo bout).
