TOKYO, JAPAN
Ex-OPBF welter champ, 34-year-old Japanese Motoki Sasaki (34-8-1, 21 KOs) (left), 138.75, captured the OPBF super-lightweight belt as he displayed his remarkable last surge after losing proceedings, floored defending champ, hard-punching Filipino Randy Suico (29-6-1, 25 KOs) (right), 139.5, in the tenth and earned a split duke (115-113 twice and 113-114) over twelve hard-fought rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan.
The 5f9h Suico, 30, having acquired three OPBF belts in as many divisions, made a good start and kept stalking the much shorter footworker all the way. Suicofs looping lefts occasionally caught Sasaki to have him nose-bleeding and have the right optic swollen. After the eighth, the open scoring system showed Suico comfortably leading on points, as follows: 78-74, 78-75 and 76-76. The tide, however, unexpectedly turned in favor of Sasaki, who caught the aggressive but careless champ with a left hook following a countering right to deck him on the seat of trunks in the closing seconds of the tenth. It was Suicofs career-first visit to the canvas. Sasaki, in round eleven, desperately battered the still groggy champ with a flurry of punches until Suico resumed his retaliation. It might be Sasaki that was in command in the final session. The see-saw affair really entertained the crowd on its feet.
WBC#10/WBA#10 Yoshihiro Kamegai (16-0, 14 KOs), 140, kept his Japanese super-light belt by stopping Tomoyuki Shiotani (12-15-1, 8 KOs), 139.25, at 1:46 of the fourth round in a scheduled ten.
