TOKYO, JAPAN
WBC#7/WBA#9 Japanese lightweight Ryuji Migaki (16-2, 12 KOs) (right), 134.5, kept his OPBF 135-pound belt as he battered previously unbeaten compatriot prospect from Osaka, Tsukasa Takase (12-1, 7 KOs) (left), 134.5, to the punch and finally halted him at 0:51 of the eighth round in a scheduled twelve rounder on Monday in Tokyo, Japan.
The methodical but busy-punching Migaki, making his second defense since his upset coronation over ex-OPBF ruler Kengo Nagashima via tenth round TKO last January, quickly floored the still nervous challenger with a solid left-right combination in the opening session. Taking the initiative, Migaki, formerly an amateur boxer of Komazawa University, whipped the game but less experienced challenger from all angles, though Takase occasionally fought back hard with strong but sporadic overhand rights and left hooks to the side of the belly.
After the fourth, the OPBF open scoring system indicated 40-35 in favor of the champ by all the three judges. Migaki kept controlling the fight and accelerated his furious attack in round eight, when the referee Sugiyama made a well-received stoppage though the 24-year-old loser looked still willing to go on. Migaki, 29, may need more convincing power to finish such a lopsided affair much earlier.
