Ex-WBA super-bantam champ Akifumi Shimoda (25-3-1, 11 KOs), 124, returned to action after forfeiting his belt to Rico Ramos in Atlantic City and displayed a fine stoppage over durable Mexican Alberto Gonzalez (16-10, 6 KOs), 123.5, at 1:00 of the tenth and final session on Monday in Tokyo, Japan. Shimoda, a fast-moving southpaw, steadily piled up points with ease, but sustained a bad laceration caused by a head-collision midway in round five. The gory Shimoda, however, accelerated his attack in the final round to have him staggering to the ropes with a flurry of punches with the refereefs intervention. The 27-year-old Japanese looked sharp and swift for the battered Mexican who showed his heart and won the praise of the crowd.
WBC#8/WBA#11 Yoshihiro Kamegai (21-0, 18 KOs), 147, had a tough time with the aggressiveness and pugnacity of Mexican hombre Alfredo Chavez (10-4, 8 KOs), 146.5, but finally caught him with a barrage of punches to prompt the third manfs halt at 1:47 of the ninth round. Kamegai cleverly averted Chavezfs roundhouse rallies to be leading widely on points but occasionally absorbed some punches of his busy attacks. The unbeaten Japanese showed his last surge to batter him from all angles and obviously hurt him, when the ref declared a well-timed stoppage.
