TOKYO, JAPAN
Unbeaten Nicaraguan Roman gChocolatitoh Gonzalez (40-0, 34 KOs), 112, collected his third world championship when he lopsidedly kept whipping defending titlist Akira Yaegashi (20-4, 10 KOs), 112, floored him in the third, steadily piled up points and finally decked the bruised and battered champ to halt him at 2:24 of the ninth rounds on Friday in Tokyo, Japan.
Yaegashi didnft utilize his footwork as expected and gamely mixed it up from the second round on, but couldnft win even a point although he showed his heart and gameness. Gonzalez was a much better boxer than Yaegashi, as expected, and he showed his excellence in mercilessly hitting the target whose face was puffed and whose left eyebrow was badly swollen with the Nicaraguanfs accurate and effective combinations.
Before the stoppage, the interim scores were as follows: Steve Morrow and Hubert Minn (both US) both 79-72 and Fernando Barbosa (US) 80-71, all for Gonzalez. The referee was Michael Griffin (Canada).
Promoter: Ohashi Promotions.
WBC supervisor: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman (Mexico).
