TOKYO, JAPAN
Hard-punching feather prospect but still unranked by the JBC, Tsuyoshi Tameda (12-1-2, 10 KOs), 126, impressively chalked up a TKO victory over previously unbeaten Filipino Mark Bernaldez (15-1, 10 KOs), 125.25, at 2:21 of the seventh session on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. Bernaldez, hailing from ALA gym in Cebu of the Philippines, displayed an eye-catching opening attack with looping left hooks and chopping rights to the still nervous and cautious Japanese. Tameda, however, started fireworks with busier combinations than the free-swinging Filipino, steadily piling up points as the contest progressed. The fifth saw Bernaldez almost stunned with a vicious right uppercut in the closing seconds with the shaky Filipino having a narrow escape. Despite Bernaldezfs furious retaliation in round six Tameda accelerated his determined attack in the next round to drop the fading Filipino with a flurry of punches, and sent him to the canvas again with a left hook to the side of the belly, when the referee Asao didnft hesitate to call a halt to save the loser from further punishment. We wonder why Tameda, with such a fine record and power punching, hasnft been ranked by the JBC. Some ringsider ironically says, gIt is more difficult for young talented Japanese boys to be ranked in Japan than in the OPBF (Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation).h Itfs because higher ranked compatriots are usually reluctant to face up-and-coming prospects in order to retain their JBC ratings.
