VENEZUELAN LANDAETA STOPS WBC#14 TELLO IN JAPAN

September 6, 2015

TAKAOKA, JAPAN

Former WBA interim 105-pound champ of Venezuela, Juan Landaeta (27-8-1, 21 KOs), 109.5, decked his first triumph here in Japan as he caught up with WBC#14 Walter Tello (21-8, 8 KOs), 108, from Panama, and chalked up a TKO victory at 2:49 of the ninth round on Sunday in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, Japan.

The 36-year-old Landaeta was recently imported by Japanfs Kashimi Gym, and now wishes to campaign on here by residing in Kanazawa city. The southpaw Venezuelan had lost four bouts to Yutaka Niida, Koki Kameda (twice) and Mark John Yap, and decked his first win in his fifth contest here. His first defeat by Kameda, however, was so controversial that the WBA ordered a rematch with Kameda winning unanimously this time.

Tello, who failed to win a world belt four times from Manuel Vargas, Giovani Segura, Alberto Rossel and Randy Petalcorin, seemed to forget his fighting spirit in his country, and Landaeta maintained the pressure on the negative rival from the outset, taking the initiative all the way. Landaeta, in round nine, floored the Panamanian with a southpaw right to the belly and followed it up with a furious combination to the helpless foe, when the third man called a well-timed halt. The shaven-skulled victor said, gI wish to become a champion again here in Japan.h We just wonder why Landaeta had been so inactive, having fought only seven times in nine years since his second Kameda loss in 2006.

Promoter: Toyama Promotions.
