HIGA, 20, RUNS TO 8-0, 8 KOs TO KEEP WBC YOUTH 112LB BELT

TOKYO, JAPAN

We fortunately could watch a couple of talented prospects with their impressive stoppages on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. Unbeaten 20-year-old Daigo Higa (8-0, 8 KOs), 112, amazingly kept punching from the outset until he finally caught up with Philippine champ Renren Tesorio (15-7-3, 4 KOs), 112, and halted him at 2:05 of the tenth and final session to retain his WBC Youth flyweight belt that he had wrested from previously undefeated Kongfah CP Freshmart via upset seventh round TKO in Thailand this July. His handler, ex-WBA junior fly champ Yoko Gushiken said in the ring, gYoufve watched a young Gushiken. Higa is still young and will grow up to be stronger without doubt.h Higa, rather short as a 112-pounder, looked still less skillful, but his aggressiveness coupled with his abundant stamina and incredible volume of solid punches was superb enough to attract the ringsiders, all of whom praised his way of ferocious victory. Tesorio, a taller puncher, occasionally caught Higa with looping left hooks, which the Japanese fighting machine ignored and kept on punching and stalking him from pillar to post. Finally did he land a vicious right to almost topple Tesorio with the ref Fukuchi wisely grabbing him to save him from further punishment.

Once-beaten lightweight Ryosuke Takami (8-1, 7 KOs), 134.75, formerly national high school champ, displayed solid and accurate jabs to backpedal hard-punching prospect Yuichi Yokoyama (15-4, 13 KOs), 134.75, and batter him upstairs and downstairs with so fine precision that the latterfs corner understandably tossed in the towel after the seventh session. Despite an amateur mark of 43 contests, Takami failed to win the annual national Novice King tourney as he suffered an upset third-round TKO defeat at the hand of unheralded 18-year-old Ryuji Ikeda last December. Since then, Takami registered four victories within the distance to show his improvement in excellent precision with which he decked an important triumph over the highly regarded Yokoyama. Takami, 22, is worth watching.

Promoter: Shirai Gushiken Promotions.
