IBF#11 ONAGA DEFEATS PHILIPPINE CHAMP SULTAN

November 15, 2015

OKINAWA, JAPAN

IBF#11 ranked 115-pounder, Japanese southpaw hard-puncher Go Onaga (18-2-2, 18 KOs), 115.5, decked an important triumph as he defeated OPBF#4 Philippine champ Jonas Sultan (8-3, 5 KOs), 116, by a unanimous decision (99-82, 98-93, 97-94) over ten speedy rounds on Sunday in Tomigusuku city, Okinawa, Japan. Onaga, unbeaten in last three years, is gunning for an OPBF title shot, and will be ranked atop in the OPBF ratings thanks to his good victory over Sultan, who fought well but was outclassed and outlegged by the faster and taller Japanese. Onaga thus scored nine victories in a row since dropping a split duke to Teiru Kinoshita (who had an unsuccessful shot at Zalani Tete in quest of the IBF belt in 2014) with the vacant national 115-pound belt on the line in 2012. Local promoter in Okinawa, ex-WBA 140-pound champ Akinobu Hiranaka (who celebrated his fiftieth birthday on the previous day) disclosed his plan, gIfll promote Onagafs OPBF or Japanese title bout on March 13 and then stage his world title bout in October next year here in Okinawa.h Hiranaka, now a fast-growing businessman, had dethroned Edwin Chapo Rosario on an upset first-round stoppage in Mexico in 1992, and is now as highly motivated as that time in having Onaga, his junior from Okinawa, seize a world belt.
