TERAJI RETAINS OPBF LIGHT HEAVY TITLE ON SPLIT NOD

Nov. 19, 1998
OSAKA, JAPAN--Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium #1--WBC #8 ranked HISASHI TERAJI, 173 1/2, kept his OPBF light heavyweight title, as he dropped Aussie JAMIE WALLACE, 172 1/2, twice, but hit the deck in the final session to earn a split decision over 12.

It was the 6-footer Teraji's third defense, but he couldn't show a fine performance despite his expected victory. Scored: Uenaka (Japan) 116-112 and Lasut (Indonesia) 114-112, both for Teraji, and Ignacio (Australia) 114-111 for Wallace. Teraji, 34, raised his ledger to 19-1-3, 11 KOs, including his sole defeat by ex-WBA middle champ Shinji Takehara via a 2nd round KO in 1992. He has not been beaten since.

Teraji, after a 13-month layoff, sent him to the deck with a solid straight right in the opening canto. Wallace kept boring in to attempt infighting, which befuddled the Japanese champ. Teraji floored him again in the 6th, but failed to finish the affair. Teraji, however, hit the deck with a left hook of Wallace in the 12th and final round.
Promoter: Yoko Adachi Promotions.
