SARA BURI, THAILAND-VEERAPOL NAKORNLUANG-PROMOTION(right photo), 118, Thailand, kept
his WBC bantam title, as he battered MAURO BLANC, 117 1/2, Uruguay, to
the punch, dropped him twice and halted him at 2:47 of the 5th round.
It resulted in a very lopsided affair. The defending champ beautifully outjabbed the WBC #9 contender from the start.
Blanc started circling so busily as to avert mixing up with the aggressive champ who kept stalking the negative opponent.
Veerapol, a short but sturdy champ, had him reeling to the ropes, and landed a solid left-right combination. Down went Blanc. The Uruguayan barely beat the count and rode a bicycle to avoid the champ's furious attack with the bell coming to his rescue.
The 5th and fatal session saw Blanc hit the deck, partly because he slipped down on the slippery canvas and chiefly because he took the champ's left shot. He resumed at the count of 9. The champ went all out for a kill, and bounced his face off with a strong right. Then a towel came in fluttering from his corner.
Veerapol, 21-1, 15 KOs, made his first defense since he dethroned Japan's Joichiro Tatsuyoshi in 6 rounds in Osaka, Japan, last Dec. Blanc, a miserable loser, reportedly fell to 15-3, 9 KOs.
Veerapol is scheduled to fight former champ Joichiro Tatsuyoshi in Osaka in Sept.
It will be their grudge fight, or Tatsuyoshi's swan song.
Referee was Malcolm Bulner of Australia.
Scored after the 4th-Garry Dean (Australia), David Harris (US) and
Kazumasa Kuwata (Japan), all 40-35 for the champ.

PS Although the WBC and other Euro-American publications still describe the WBC bantam champ as Veerapol Sahaprom, he already graduated from that previous ring name and now fights as VEERAPOL NAKORNLUANG-PROMOTION. It is common that Thai boxers change their nom-de-guerres with new managers or sponsors or by inviting good luck based on the onomancy. The Thai onomancy must be the very enemy of us, world record-keepers. Yes, Nakornluang-Promotion, not Sahaprom any longer.
