WBC #6 FEATHER KOSHIMOTO STOPS BASALO

KOSHIMOTO July 18, 1999
MUNAKATA, JAPAN-Elongated lefty TAKASHI KOSHIMOTO(right photo), WBC #6 ranked feather contender and Japanese champ, 127, lopsidely outpunched Filipino DODONG BASALO, GAB #2 ranked super-feather, 125 1/2, and finally had him turn his back en route to a fine TKO win at 1:12 of the 6th session in a scheduled 10.

The 5'10" unbeaten lefty swept all rounds prior to the stoppage. He intended to finish his opponent with good shots to the face, not to the belly, since Filipino boxers are said to have a weak point at the breadbasket. But Basalo was durable, so Koshimoto changed his strategy into a combination to the midsection, with which he weakened Basalo and made him give up midway in the fatal session.

Koshimoto, 22-0-2, 12 KOs, is eager to have a world title shot at the WBA feather crown against Freddie Norwood, since his first taget Cesar Soto lately decided to face Prince Naseem Hamed in November. Koshimoto has improved his defensive skill, along with his offensive talent. But Norwood might be a bit too tough and strong for this fast-rising southpaw.

Basalo reportedly dipped to 6-7-3, 2 KOs.

JBC #10 ranked feather prospect DAINOSHIN KUMA, 131 1/4, sank Filipino MELITO REYMUNDA, 130, with solid body shots at 2:32 of the third round in a semi-final 8.

Kuma, the winner of All Japan Novice King tourney, raised his unbeaten mark to 11-0, 5 KOs. The Filipino loser impaired to 7-10-6, 3 KOs.
