TOKYO, JAPAN-WBC #5 ranked lightie HIROYUKI SAKAMOTO(right photo), 144, displayed a
devastating left hook and impressively flattened Thai super-feather
champ PRAWESNA SAKMUANGKLAENG, 141 1/4, at 1:31 of the opening canto.
Having failed to win the WBC 135-pound crown twice, losing to Steve Johnston and Cesar Bazan, Sakamoto is gunning for his third shot at a world throne and he proved to be much superior to the Thai lefty.
Sakamoto improved his log to 34-3, 24 KOs. Prawesna fell to 7-3, 4 KOs.
WBC #6 ranked flyweight PANIENG "OKUDA" SASIPRABHA, 113, was awarded a controversial split technical decision over game and aggressive MASAKI KAWABATA, 113, at 1:38 of the 9th session.
The Japan-based Thailander forgot his style and recklessly exchanged hot rallies to absorb many right crosses of the onrushing Japanese. As Kawabata's cut over the left eyebrow worsened, ref Kumazaki stopped the proceedings and took a technical decision. Scored-79-78 and 79-76, both for Panieng, and 79-77 for Kawabata. Kawabata's adherents severely jeered the verdict.
